NPR just did a story on Day to Day in which the reporter spoke of people in Vegas being “under water” on their homes. That is, a person’s owes more on their home than it is worth. She then proceeded to give an example of a man who was in this situation, and was now struggling to make his payments.
Since when does a home’s value affect monthly payments? My payment is roughly $1,500 per month without taxes and insurance, and though my home’s value has fluctuated over the years, the payment has stayed the same. In fact, I have no idea how much my home is worth. I don’t plan to sell it any time soon.
I have a fixed mortgage, and I realize the people in trouble often have adjustable mortgages, and their rates have gone up, so their payments went up. However, this has NOTHING to do with the value of the home.
Also, just as many people (more, actually, in the last year) who have adjustable mortgages have seen their rates adjust DOWNWARD due to rates being at near historic lows.
If someone loses a job, that affects their ability to make their loan payment. If, however, their home value drops, this does NOT affect their payment or ability to make it, and I’m sick of hearing stories on the news that say it does.
Wildwriter, I’m sorry, but you’re mistaken. The story yesterday on Day to Day, did not ever mention this person’s financial problems.
The reporter IMPLIED repeatedly that the inability to pay was linked to the home value.
I listen to NPR daily as well. I think the problem is that they have a bunch of people from NYC who have never owned a home reporting on home ownership without knowing the facts.
custody hearing?
Does anyone have a link to provide stats on which parent they usually end up with after divorce?
Of course, I would guess they go to the mother usually, but provide a link if you can.
Is it correct to say that our society (for the most part) assumes that the mother is a naturally better parent than the father?
